That You May Know…

I write these things to you so that you may know that you have eternal life, you who believe in the name of the Son of God. And we have this confidence in Him, that if we ask anything according to His will, He hears us. And if we know that He hears us in regard to whatever we ask, we know that what we have asked Him for is ours. If anyone sees his brother sinning, if the sin is not deadly, he should pray to God and He will give him life. This is only for those whose sin is not deadly. There is such a thing as deadly sin, about which I do not say that you should pray. All wrongdoing is sin, but there is sin that is not deadly. We know that no one begotten by God sins; but the one begotten by God He protects, and the evil one cannot touch him. We know that we belong to God, and the whole world is under the power of the evil one. We also know that the Son of God has come and has given us discernment to know the One who is true. And we are in the One who is true, in His Son Jesus Christ. He is the true God and eternal life. Children, be on guard against idols.   I John 5:13-21

I write these things to you so that you may know that you have eternal life, you who believe in the name of the Son of God.

Well, we’ve come to the end of our study of I John. I hope it has been an encouragement and a source of growth for you in your walk with Christ. I know it has for me.

So as we look at this final section of John’s letter, let us look at the major points he’s written about, that confirms that we have eternal life.

·        We must follow Apostolic teaching  (1:2)

·        Respond to the proclamation  (1:3)

·        We cannot walk in darkness   (1:6)

·        We must walk in the Light   (1:6)

·        We must confess our sins  (1:9)

·        We keep His commandments  (2:4, 6)

·        We must love our brother  (2:10,11)

·        We must not love the world  (2:15)

·        We must never deny the Son  (2:23)

·        We must remain in Him  (2:28, 3:6)

·        We must love our brother  (3:11)

·        We must help our brother in need  (3:17,18)

·        We must keep His commandments  (3:22)

·        We do what pleases Him  (3:22)

·        Acknowledge Jesus Christ come in the flesh  (4:2)

·        We must love one another  (4:7)

·        We must remain in love  (4:16)

·        We must not fear  (4:18)

·        We must love our brother  (4:21)

·        Believe Christ is begotten by God  (5:1)

·        Keep His commandments  (5:3)

·        We must have faith  (5:4)

·        Believe the testimony of the three Witnesses  (5:8)

·        We must pray to God  (5:14)

·        We must pray for our brothers  (5:16)

·        Guard against idols  (5:21)

These are the main points he gives as ways to know that we have eternal life. Quite a list, huh? This seems a far cry from “sola fide” (faith alone). Please don’t get me wrong, you have to have faith (that’s in John’s list) it’s just not the only thing on His list.

Here is the danger that befalls us as human beings; decision making.

But the choice here is simple, John through the Holy Spirit, tells us how to know. But this list scares us, because we don’t live up to it. We are weak. The beauty here is, that God knows that already, that is why He sends us His Spirit, to strengthen us. But I know in my own life, how I’ve grieved the Holy Spirit when I’ve hidden behind “faith alone”, because as a disciple of Christ I am called to follow Him; to do what He did. If I don’t, I ‘d be a fool to think He would welcome me into His kingdom (remember the parable of the talents?). I must have faith in Him AND continue to do His work. It’s not an either/or decision; it’s a both/and decision.

So this week, let us decide to be true disciples of the One true God through His One true Church.
