An eye for an eye…

You have heard that it was said," An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth." But I say to you, offer no resistance to one who is evil. When someone strikes you on your right cheek, turn the other one to him as well. If anyone wants to go to law with you over your tunic, hand him your cloak as well. Should anyone press you into service for one mile, go with him for two miles. Give to the one who asks of you, and do not turn your back on one who wants to borrow.  Matt. 5:38-42

Limb for limb, eye for eye, tooth for tooth! The same injury that a man gives another shall be inflicted on him in return.  Lev.24:20

This O.T. commandment was meant to moderate vengeance, the punishment should not exceed the injury done. Jesus tells us not to retaliate even in this proportionate way.

1) Offer no resistance to one who is evil, Paul says it this way in Romans 12:17," Never pay back evil for evil to anyone."

2)When someone strikes you on your right cheek, turn the other one to him as well, is again a command not to retaliate. This is not assault, this is an open hand slap and is more insult than injury. It's a belittling of your person. As Christians we must fight the temptation to exact personal revenge on our oppressors.

3)If anyone wants to go to law with you over your tunic, hand him your cloak as well, as Jesus' disciples we must also be willing to part with belongings in the face of persecution(Heb. 10:32-34).

4)Should anyone press you into service for one mile, go with him for two miles, Roman garrisons in Palestine had the right to requisition property and services of the native population. Jesus gave up his "rights" to heaven and we are unwilling to give up our "rights" in a place that is not our permanent home?

5)Give to the one who asks of you, and do not turn your back on one who wants to borrow, all that we are, and all that we have belong to God, not us. Why do we act so selfish?

Thank you Father, Son and Holy Spirit for your selflessness! I pray I will become more like you. Amen.
