Blessed are they who hunger and thirst…

Blessed are they who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be satisfied. Matt. 5:6

Have you ever been so hungry that your stomach just ached? Or so thirsty that you can't even swallow? These analogies were well understood by Jesus' audience, and just read and glossed over by us today.

This aching hunger and thirst should be for that which is far more beneficial to us…righteousness.

In Matt. 5:20, Jesus states " unless your righteousness surpasses that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will not enter the kingdom of heaven." Are we hungry for the food of God? What is the food of God? "My food is to do the will of the one who sent me," John 4:34.

When we do the will of God, our hunger is being satisfied by God. When we do the will of God, we are acting in a righteous way, for we are acting as Jesus acted, and as He wants us to continue in that way.

He didn't shout out from the rooftops, " I am the Messiah!" He met people where they were, with love and compassion, the love and compassion of God. I think we get to busy sometimes talking about Jesus, rather than being about Jesus.

What about the thirst? "… but whoever drinks of the water I shall give him shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall become in him a well of water springing up to eternal life." John 4:14

So let us feast on the bread of life, and the cup of the new covenant.

Thanks for the comment, Lily.”Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the land” simply put, is to humble yourself before God (continually) to inherit the reward of the promised land.
Thanks for the question and the visit. Hope my response was as timely as you needed.
